Supernatural- movie day

In the language school that I have been working for 6 months, I wanted to organise a movie day and I chose a tv series of which language is clear and that has American accent. I prepared  vocabulary lists for the episodes,  questions related to the each episode and vocabulary exercises. I believe that  words alone can be hard to remember. But with the tv series and collocations in that episodes. students can remember more easily them. To do list is here :

  • Before the movie day:

1 )   one week before, give the vocabulary list with the meaning sheet

2) there should be a blank sheet with the table on it, so students can study the words alone if she/ he wants

  • On the movie day:

1) Give the question sheet and make sure that they understand all the questions which are related to the episode ( because if they don't, you cannot get a proper answer)

2)Watch the episode

3) Get the answers ( if all the students are not sure, you can  play the particular part again)

4) Then distribute the vocabulary exercise sheet

5) It's done  :)

TV series:

Supernatural episode 1 season1
supernatural episode 2 season 1
supernatural episode 3 season 1
supernatural episode 4 season 1
supernatural episode 5 season 1
supernatural episode 6 season 1
supernatural episode 7 season 1
supernatural episode 8 season 1

Naughty Learners

These are challenging students in  everywhere and I have two of them in my classes ( First one: 4th grade, Second one : 6th grade). I'm going to define them and my solutions to keep them concentrated for the lessons.
Morning group is from the local school and they were in the same class at school as well. They knew each other from their kindergarden class. Afternoon class is different because they did not know each other.

  • Morning class:

First day, I met them one by one. After meeting, all of the students frequently told me just one name "X" (I cant say the name of the students because of privacy). X was a chubby boy and he is physically bigger than his other friends, so he generally bullied his friends. For example, he beat them, tore their notebooks and cursed them and did not respect anyone.

  1.     Warning him and parents
Firstly, I tried to warn him and made him to establish emphaty with his friends.

RESULT: It did not work! :(

As teachers, we called his parents;however, his father said  "okay, we re going to deal with this problem."

RESULT: It did not work!  :(

X was always talking about going to the mall, meeting his friends, buying a new phone and a scooter. I listened to his talks and recognized that his parents often told him that  if he got high scores, they would buy these aforementioned materials or allow him to go somewhere he liked. But, they did not apply any punishment  when he  misbehaved. Punishment does not mean "beating".  They could impose a ban for something he liked.  Moreoever, the students at his age do not have any mobile phones because some attendant mothers help them to go to the school and back to home. However, X had a mobile phone . He played musics or took his friends' pictures and  threatened them.  These are very wrong actions.

     2. Warning the students and other mothers

After I tried two options, day by day I analyzed the students' behaviours towards him. While I was teaching, they were asking me some questions like " ı filled this page, can ı pass the other page? or can ı use a red pencil? etc..."  One day, ı asked them to write what is written on the board. X did not write and I saw him.  Before me, the students complained about X . Even when he looked at the other way except the board, his friends complained about him.  Also, I learned that  their teacher at school charged the stduents that they should tell her if X misbehaved in the course.  Excuse me but this is nonsense.  The other teacher should not barge in my business or students lives out of the school.  The students got used to complaining even about after-school activities.

I warned all of the students: "Do not complain me about anything or anyone, if you do, ı will give a punishment both of you" or I sometimes made them isolated from the class in the game time at the end of the lessons. I thought that they can learn to solve their problems. Moreoever, I picked some classroom rules on the wall and made them remember these rules when they tried to break the rules.

RESULT: It worked! yeeeeeeey  :)

After each lesson, all mothers complained me about X. I was sick of it. I told them not to worry and I was going to deal with this problem.

3. Super Asisstant

X started to understand that I was not angry with him and he started to communicate with me. For example, some students made fun of his weights and he talked to me about this situation instead of beating his friends.
Then, I wanted to give him some responsibilities like erasing the board or helping me to carry some materials.

RESULT: It worked! yeeey :)

He helped me and I can see his changing behaviours with my eyes. He started to respect me and even with my one look , ı could warn him. I'm thinking the days one month ago: X was tearing his friends' notebooks and cursing them when I was in the class. Despite of my warnings, he continued and I shouted at him "X, BE Quiet!".  Guess what happened! He was quiet but he pretended to talk with his gestures. I was about to be mad :) Now, I can weep for joy when I see him like a changed child.
 However, that is not enough.

4. Target Language

X asked me the meaning of some curses like " shit". He heard it in the movies. I did not tell the exact meaning but I told him that it was a bad word. Not only X but also the other students were talking too much and cursing in the class with the begining of Spring. I taught them some practical sentences and questions like " can ı speak Turkish? Can ı go to the toilet? Can you repeat? I dont know. etc...." I told them " It is time to speak in English. We have a rule. If you speak in Turkish even a word, you have to pay money for each word. After the season, we can make a party with that money"  Because my course is in a private language school, it was not hard for them to pay money.

RESULT: It worked ! yey.... :)

After this rule, the students listened to me and the lessons as concentrated. They were also happy because they believed that  they can speak English. They told their the other classmates in the scool that " we are speaking English in the course" :D

Seeing the results that I tried during the whole term and gaining the learner instead of ignoring him is an inexpressible feeling.

  • Afternoon class:

This class was one of the most mixed class because there were students who are from 2nd grade to 6th grade. I did not support that kind of system; however, the school wanted this.  I had so much trouble. That is; the student who is from 2nd grade cannot catch up with  the other students in terms of writing. However, he can understand better than the others. Let's get back to the issue at hand. I will call the student who was naughty as Z.

Z was very clever boy, but he did not want to learn English. He came to the course with the force of his parents. Even very teachers may have difficulty in getting this kid into the lesson as full concentrated. He had the similar misbehaviours. For example; he gave nicknames to his friends as fat (but in a bad way).  I warned him twice and this worked! :)

One day, I wanted them to open their notebooks and he threw his notebook from the window and told me that " I dont have a notebook, so ı dont have to write anything." I was shocked. I gave him a piece of paper and told him to write. If he didnot write, I would tell him  that I would not let him go after the class. He listened to me and did what I said.

I was sorry for him because there were two behaviours that I could not change. One of them was telling a lie. He had a very good imagination, but when ı asked him to draw their last holidays, he drew the Eifel Tower . Moreover, when I asked him what he was going to do in the next summer, he answered me as he is going to the USA because he has a summer villa there. Although he is a poor boy, he told lies about  going to the USA every time.

The other behaviour is when I want to touch or caress his head, he did not let me because of fear of being beaten. I learned that his teacher in the school beat them or ran the gautlet.  I'm very sorry that there are still these kinds of teachers who are fond of bullying.

Bullying in Schools

I and my classmates prepared a presentation about bullying in schools.  Recently, cyber bullying is the most seen one, but we focused on bullying generally.  We made this in our Guidance course. Moreover, I chose to prepare our slide on prezi.  I felt that this is more effective than powerpoint presentations because it is not stable, it takes you to the topic naturally.  If I were you, I would definitely use this one! :)

Take a look ----->

This is a photo from my presentation :)

LESSON PLANS OF MY COLLEAGUES

One of my colleagues, Meral, prepared and applied very good lesson plans in our internship. The students were different from mine. They were 12-13 years old and false pre-intermediate.
This link includes : a lesson plan for

  • REPORTED COMMANDS
  • PASSIVE VOICE
  • USED TO
  • NOUN CLAUSES
  • PRESENT PERFECT- SIMPLE PAST

Gizem created nice lesson plans :

The last colleague is Ozge.  Her class level was different than us. Here are her enjoyable lesson plans:

Comparatives and Superlatives Lesson Plan

I prepared a lesson for comparatives and superlatives.  The students enjoyed a lot.  However, for the last post activity, I was able to apply just first 4 exercises.  Therefore, you can make shorter if you want to use it in your lesson.

Here is my lesson plan :

To see my lesson more clear, I can show you some pictures which I prepared for this lesson.
These are warm-up and presentation (while teaching)stages.  First, I made the students remember the pictures or define them.  I asked " what do you see in the picture, what are they doing? where? which one goes faster? which one is prettier etc...".  I got the answers and wrote the full sentences on the left of the pictures with the students, together.  Pictures were on the center of the board.  I made the students aware of "-er, -ier, more" and the topic of comparatives.  Then I showed small pictures which are related to superlatives.  I wrote the sentences with the students on the right of the board.

This is : Seda Sayan is prettier than Bülent Ersoy. ( students laughed this picture a lot)
Adriana Lima is the prettiest. ( Boys loved this.  :) )

This is: Sleeping in the car is more comfortable than on the chair.
The bed is the most comfortable.

I called first one George and the second one Robert. This is: Robert has a longer nose than George.
                                                                                             Pinocchio has the longest nose.
Boys loved these pictures. This is: Doğan can go faster than Nano.
Bugatti can go the fastest of all the other cars. ( I did not know Bugatti.  I learned it while preparing my lesson, but when I asked to the students if they knew this car, boys guessed immediately.)

This is: I can solve the second problem more easily than the first one.
This problem is the most easily solved.

This is : Rihanna sings as sweetly as Beyonce.

After they learned comparatives and superlatives, I put the 3 members of "One Direction".  Some girls loved,  but some girls did not like them.  I gave information about them on the board.

Then, I gave the students worksheets. (4-5 minutes)

After eliciting the students' answers, I divided the students into 5 groups.  Each group should have 3 students. They chose their groups' names.  I showed a demo of  the game.  For each part, they chose a member of their groups and one member from the other groups.  They will compare them.  If it is grammatically and really correct, they will get one point for their groups.  I wanted the students to do first 4 parts, then collected one paper from each group.  I read their sentences and we saw their proves and mistakes.  I gave candies to the winner group.

If  I had less time for my post activity, I would not apply it.  Instead of this, I can give the students this one:

However, my post activity includes students interaction and they worked collaboratively.  Therefore, it worked very well.

I hope, you enjoyed it.

Past Simple- Past Continuous ( when- while) Lesson Plan

I changed this lesson a lot because I could not imagine the time learners would spend on the exercises.  They had already learned past simple and past continuous tense( when- while).  Therefore,  I did not need to explain the tenses. I used running dictation activity.

Here is the my lesson plan:

These are some pictures from my lesson:

This is my treasure chest. The reason I chose this kind of box is that my lesson started with pirates, so I tried to make my lesson in the same theme in terms of activities.  Therefore, the students can connect everything in one clear concept.  There are yellow papers like golden in it.  Each student chose one of them and  completed the sentences with when and while. This was at the end of the lesson.

These are for vocabulary teaching before reading the story.

I tried to emphasize the pronunciation of "sword" because we may read it as it is written.  I made the students to repeat the word.

A Tip for When / While:  Draw 2 boys and girls on the board.  Boys are in the name of  when and while.  Girls are in the name of past and past continuous.Tell a story : "In old years, there were men dominance and wives could not walk with their husbands.  Women just followed men.  In those times, "when" married to "past simple" and "while" married to "past continuous".  As a result, "when" went somewhere, "past simple" followed him and "while" went somewhere, "past continuous" followed him."  Then draw a heart to show they loved each other and when was with past simple, while was with past continuous.
They may keep in mind this in that way! :)

A Tip for  -ing: In Turkish , we say "-ing takısı" ( takı means a jewellery).  Therefore, whenever you'll teach a lesson including continuous tense, as a female teacher you can wear a necklace, so the students understand they will learn a tense which has "-ing".  Also, we can say that this tense is very fashionista, so it has always its jewellery (-ing) on the verb.

I hope, you enjoyed it! :)

Space Tourism Reading (future tense -will- going to review) Lesson Plan

This lesson was very interesting for me because I did not prepare any worksheet for the lesson.  I had to use the student's book and there was a reading passage, exercises...  I used some of the exercises on the board.  It was a very enjoyable lesson.

Here is my lesson plan:

I taught vocabulary in my warm-up stage.  These words are in the text, so they became ready for the text.  I stuck them on the board after showing with my hand.  Each flashcard has a picture and a hidden name of it.  At the back of the card, Turkish translation was written.

This is the copy of the book. The students scaned the text and found the words in it.  Then, They read the text and did exercises 3 which are comprehension questions of the text.

After the reading and comprehension questions,  I stuck prediction situations on the board.  It was written on the book and I told "will" is used for predictions, so they chose one situation and created sentences. This is the version of the book:

This is my version on the board :

After eliciting the answers, I divided the students as groups and gave one phrasal verb to each group :

This is the reward for the winner teams :

After finishing the lesson, one of my colleaque Özge taught the future tense and continuous and applied some activities in the second lesson.  This lesson was very enjoable, too. :)   Below, there is a story about one couple to show the students the difference of talking about the future.

What is your favorite word ?

This is a both simple and difficult question because most people do not think of it. However, some people have already thought about this like below the video.

A language is alive like humans, animals and it can born and die.  A language can change because of many things, especially interaction with the other cultures and inventions. But which inventions?  I heard what have you thought now :)  Computer and internet. Nowadays, the word of "internet" seems very usual. However, it is a nice word and it means a lot. All words like internet have a history in it like humans.  The other popular word is "blog".  Bloggers, blogging, blog etc.. , many words are occuring with the help of the technology and these words can be someone's favorite words.  David Crystal, who is a linguist, is one of these people.  Let's hear his favorite words !

If you ask me , my favorite word is "write".  It seems usual, but the important thing is what you attribute a meaning to a word and what kind of value the word itself has in your life... :)  I love to write. "Write" is everywhere in my life and it is the most beautiful invention according to me.

My study of Students’ Opinions about Blogs

  • INTRODUCTION
The Blog started to become a popular tool on the internet. Generally, its reason is that blogs do not need any programming skills on the computer or on the internet. Therefore, blogs are used in so many areas. One of those areas is the education.  Especially language learning can be obtained via blogs. The aim of this study was to explore how blogs are seen by the students and effects of blogs on language skills such as reading, writing and listening and advantages and disadvantages of using blogs for language learners.

- READING

Learners read each others’ blogs and they learned something about their friends’ worlds. A friend’s blog could be considered as an authentic material so learners became more enthusiastic to read their blogs. Because of that these readings on the blogs were simple and shorter than other readings, learners liked reading blogs. In a study , a learner said that “ I think it’s the most beautiful tool of the world and it allows us the most magic thing…” ( Downes, 2004, p.14)

-WRITING

Writing on a blog was partially different from any writing assignment, because learners might not understand the assignment’s main content. However, learners had to have a purpose while writing to the blog and they thought there were other readers. This thought  made them aware of what they wrote (Ward, 2004, p.3)

-LISTENING

The teacher might put some listening activities into his/her blog and students might go there. To illustrate, Banville (2010) suggested jigsaw listening and he used free audio editor and recorder Audacity. He made his own listening test to give it to his students.  If this activity had been put on his blog, students would go there to improve themselves in listening whenever they want.

ADVANTAGES of using blogs
  1. Interaction :Blogs made learners interact not only with the computer, but also with others. For these learners, a computer could be considered as a medium for communication. Blogs do not like bots as Alice (http://alice.pandorabots.com/ ). Alice was an artificial intelligence bot that you could chat in English. It could not answer all of the questions correctly because it was arranged beforehand by an administrator. Also it was not real. However, blogs were more realistic so that people, not computers, could ask you questions and answer your questions.
  2. Self- expression:  The posts on the blogs were served as a kind of diary. Moreover, they could be witness for their improvement. That is, it was recorded chronologically and whenever  learners wanted , they could see their previous writings or comments on others’ blogs. They developed themselves consciously or unconsciously. However, at the end, they could understand its advantages.
  3. Simplicity:Blogs were easy to use. Its users did not have to get knowledge of all computer or program skills. Then, some class discussions could be counted as an advantage of using blogs. That is, a blog might be a place where students discussed any topic.

DISADVANTAGES of using blogs

  1. For reading skill: Hammersly (2003) found that there was a disadvantage for reading skill. Learners read blogs superficially on the computer screen. Therefore, they could not improve their skills. Moreover, he justified that technological communication had a negative effect on writing skill, too. That is, learners used the literacy in a wrong way.
  2. Being offensive: Some people or learners might be offensive while criticizing or commenting on their peers’ blogs. Students could be demotivated.
  3. Privacy settings:Some students posted their  diaries, personal information and their photos and they might not know privacy issues. Strangers might make sarcastic comments on learners’ blogs.
  4. Plagiarism: Learners posted some information on their blogs without knowing copy-right issues.

  • DATA COLLECTION AND PARTICIPANTS
A quantitative survey was used in this study. ten Turkish students, one male and nine females, ages 20- 40, were from several hometowns and in the second, third or fourth year of classes at the same college. Students used an individual blogger account and they commented on each other’s blogs in the semester for one of their courses.

  • RESULTS
They got enjoyed while writing on the blog and reading it :  60%
The students were visiting their blogs often: 80%
The students thought that they were aware of  benefits of blogs:  50%
Disagree with the power of the blog on the listening skill: 30%
The students had not used a blog for educational purposes until the course: 80%

The things the students like the best in blogging:

Also, in the questionnaire, the students commented on the other ways that a blog could be useful in their language development :

  •  It can be used for developing their vocabulary knowledge.
  •  Class discussions can be organized  in blogs.
  • To see others’ use of language can be useful.

According to participants:
The most important advantage was encouraging them to write something. The second one was providing communication via blogs. The other advantages were to create a friendly environment, to be good for extrovert people who like to talk, to help connect to the world,  to share ideas, to get different ideas from people or articles, to develop an ability of self-expression of the students, to improve language learning skills, to be good for the participation of shy students, to get feedback for posts and to interact with the foreigners who speak the target language as a native.

According to 30% of participants:
They said : the blogs were not interesting for some people, they were boring, they included unnecessary information,   they needed ability of using computer programs, they took too much time of the students,  they could be terrible because of internet problems, they could be waste of time because using it is according to your position in your life and they could be dangerous in terms of privacy settings.

Conclusion:

This study demonstrated that the language learners could mostly improve their writing, with the help of using blogs in lessons. Moreover, the survey supplied learners, who did not know what a blog was really and its benefits with costs, a general and meaningful view on blogs. If  the disadvantages of using blogs were cleared away, the students would get more benefits from the blog by writing on the blogs more and doing it intrinsically...
